Year 11 revision Walking Talking Mock

This mock will have the first 4 topics of unit 2 and the last 2 topics of unit 1. The first 4 topics of unit 2 are:
1. Population Dynamics
o    Demographic Transition Model
o    Contrasting population pyramids – Germany vs Mali
o    China anti-natal policy – One child (financial penalties)
o    Singapore pro-natal policy – Have 3 or more (financial incentives)
o    Migration – UK – open door within EU, tighter restrictions on people from outside the EU (skills tests)
2. Consuming Resources
o    Oil – Where is it found? (M. East) who uses it most? (USA, Europe) Problems
o    Malthus and Boserup’s theories
o    How local and national government try to achieve sustainability:
       Local councils website contains information on why recycling is benefitting the environment.
       National law on only selling energy saving light bulbs in shops
       Setting up of National Parks – which conserve habitats/landscape for future generations
       Government (with the EU) set targets for recycling (e.g 60% by 2020)
       Local collection of recycling now means 46% of waste is recycled
       National campaigns to raise awareness of issues, e.g. ‘Recycling: the possibilities are endless’ and ‘Switch it Off’ campaigns, educate the public to try and change behaviour
o    Costs and benefits of renewable energy and hydrogen fuel cells. E.g Wind energy no emissions but only work when it is windy.
3. Globalisation
o        Major players TNC’s (trans-national corporations), WTO (world trade organisation) and IMF (International Monetary Fund)
o        Clark-fisher model
o        TNC – Nike ‘accused of using sweatshops in SE Asia), VW mergers with other groups (e.g. Lamborghini) and Tesco (shops all over the world + accounting and logistics takes place in India)
o        China FDI (foreign direct investment) in Angola , Africa. This is state lead as the companies are owned by the Chinese government
4. Development Dilemmas
o        Development gap narrowed in SE Asia, widened with sub-Saharan Africa.
o        Theories – modernisation and dependency
o        Tanzania – a sub-Saharan country – barriers to development
o        Disparities within Brazil (core/periphery)

o        Top down vs bottom up + costs and benefits of a top down (Santo Antonio Dam)
The last two topics of unit 1 are:
6.River Processes and Pressures
Contrasts along a rivers course River Severn
Changes in channel shape and characteristics width of channel, bedload, discharge, depth.
River Landforms (e.g. floodplain, waterfall) and processes (e.g. erosion – hydraulic action, abrasion)
Impact of weathering, mass movement and geology on river valley shape
Why rivers flood (hydrographs) R. Colorado
How people cause flooding Tewkesbury
Flood defences (hard and soft engineering York/Darlington)

7.Oceans on the Edge                                                     
Marine ecosystems – coral reefs, mangrove swamps
Threats to marine ecosystems (coral reefs)
Marine food webs and how they are disturbed (e.g. overfishing or eutrophication)
Impact of Climate Change(warming leads to coral bleaching)
Local pressures (Soufriere, St.Lucia, Lamlash Bay)
How local groups may disagree about management (e.g Soufriere, St.Lucia or Lamlash Bay, Firth of Clyde)
Case studies of marine management (e.g Soufriere, St.Lucia or Lamlash Bay, Firth of Clyde)
Global solutions to declining health of ocean (Coral triangle, IWC)
