Year 11 revision Walking Talking Mock
This mock will have the first 4 topics of unit 2 and the last 2 topics of unit 1. The first 4 topics of unit 2 are:
1. Population Dynamics
o
Demographic Transition Model
o
Contrasting population pyramids – Germany vs
Mali
o
China anti-natal policy – One child (financial
penalties)
o
Singapore pro-natal policy – Have 3 or more
(financial incentives)
o
Migration – UK – open door within EU, tighter
restrictions on people from outside the EU (skills tests)
2. Consuming Resources
o
Oil – Where is it found? (M. East) who uses it
most? (USA, Europe) Problems
o
Malthus and Boserup’s theories
o
How local and national government try to achieve
sustainability:
•
Local councils website contains information on
why recycling is benefitting the environment.
•
National law on only selling energy saving light
bulbs in shops
•
Setting up of National Parks – which conserve
habitats/landscape for future generations
•
Government (with the EU) set targets for
recycling (e.g 60% by 2020)
•
Local collection of recycling now means 46% of
waste is recycled
•
National campaigns to raise awareness of issues,
e.g. ‘Recycling: the possibilities are endless’ and ‘Switch it Off’ campaigns,
educate the public to try and change behaviour
o
Costs and benefits of renewable energy and
hydrogen fuel cells. E.g Wind energy no emissions but only work when it is
windy.
3. Globalisation
o
Major players TNC’s (trans-national
corporations), WTO (world trade organisation) and IMF (International Monetary
Fund)
o
Clark-fisher model
o
TNC – Nike ‘accused of using sweatshops in SE
Asia), VW mergers with other groups (e.g. Lamborghini) and Tesco (shops all
over the world + accounting and logistics takes place in India)
o
China FDI (foreign direct investment) in Angola
, Africa. This is state lead as the companies are owned by the Chinese
government
4. Development
Dilemmas
o
Development gap narrowed in SE Asia, widened
with sub-Saharan Africa.
o
Theories – modernisation and dependency
o
Tanzania – a sub-Saharan country – barriers to
development
o
Disparities within Brazil (core/periphery)
o
Top down vs bottom up + costs and benefits of a
top down (Santo Antonio Dam)
The last two topics of unit 1 are:
6.River Processes and Pressures
Contrasts along a rivers course River Severn
Changes in channel shape and
characteristics width of
channel, bedload, discharge,
depth.
River Landforms (e.g.
floodplain, waterfall) and
processes (e.g. erosion –
hydraulic action, abrasion)
Impact of weathering, mass movement and
geology on river valley shape
Why rivers flood (hydrographs)
R. Colorado
How people cause flooding Tewkesbury
Flood defences (hard and soft
engineering York/Darlington)
7.Oceans on the Edge
Marine ecosystems – coral reefs,
mangrove swamps
Threats to marine ecosystems (coral reefs)
Marine food webs and how they are
disturbed (e.g.
overfishing or eutrophication)
Impact of Climate Change(warming leads
to coral bleaching)
Local pressures (Soufriere, St.Lucia, Lamlash Bay)
How local groups may disagree about
management (e.g Soufriere, St.Lucia or Lamlash Bay, Firth of
Clyde)
Case studies of marine management (e.g Soufriere, St.Lucia or Lamlash Bay, Firth of
Clyde)
Global solutions to declining health of
ocean (Coral
triangle, IWC)
