Influence of Development On Tectonic Disasters 1/11/16
Varying Severity of Tectonic Hazards
In this lesson you are going to research three different disasters and consider various factors. Levels of development, magnitude, governance (organisation) and corruption.
The three disasters we will use are familiar to you.
a) Haiti earthquake
b) China (Sichuan) earthquake
c) Japan earthquake.
Tasks
1) Find out the levels of development for each country. Make comparisons. Use the following links: Rankings HDI Data
2) Find out about the severity of each earthquake using the EM- DAT database. You can find hazard profiles here.
3) Levels of corruption can be found here
4) Governance is an important aspect of a country’s resilience.
The importance of governance was brought into the limelight with the Tohoku earthquake in 2011 which caused the Japanese tsunami. Japan’s energy policies, investment and ageing population led to failings in its planning for such an event, while the 2010/11 Christchurch earthquakes showed that good management worked, but slow insurance payouts could have led to more problems for the country.
What can you find out about governance of the three disasters? In other words how did they try to manage them.
For your homework: Produce a report comparing these three events with the title - 'The reasons why there are different impacts of tectonic hazards'
